here comes waltuh

how waltuh.cyou was birthed, and etc.

ariana.afnet.us is down.

before i began, first, i am an admin of lecturify.net, a volunteer. Still was today but no longer as active as i am in waltuh.cyou. One day at around September 2025, ariana server went down permanently in all out of sudden. we did not managed to do a backup in time due to lack of resources. as the result, the following services is no longer available:

we still had an openbsd server running named oraneg at lecturify.net, but i already lose motivations to keep things up from here.

so i ended up thinking on purchasing my own VPS and a domain instead.

initially, my initial goal was to sell some sort of a shared NAT VPS for those whose looking for cheap hosting, but after i own a VPS for once again, making a maintenance and moderation for it is simply rough enough to be tolerated. so i back down on that plan.

here comes the VPS

on january 10, 2026, i purchased a VPS at Contabo, I picked the smallest packet one (Cloud VPS 10), and then purchased 250 GB of object storage because i am afraid that i got less SSD spaces.

but little did i knew, i literally missed the info. Didn't saw that the VPS that i have will be already bundled with 150 GB of SSD, and then, this object storage that now i am not sure when & how to use it...

All of it for $10/month...

either way, this is my setup:

the incus setup

about the incus container setup that i have ...

  1. each container got their own local ip, which they can communicate with each other via a bridge
  2. the host can access to the services that those containers bind on their container without the need of tcp forward or similar

so, basically,

caddy(host) ->
-> 10.xx.xx.6 akkoma(container) -> akkoma backend
-> 10.xx.xx.5 postgresql(container) -> postgresql backend

since it's done because of bridge, there should have no performance impact at all.

the thing is, despite of how the flow looked. every services are being setted up manually per container. I know that i can simply just use docker/podman to make the flow goes easy, but there's simply something that's lingering on my mind about these solutions.

now, that we've talked how the setup goes, let's take a look at the domain that i use.

the domain

initially, i only purchased the domain first before the server itself. i've looked around several domain registrars, and i remembered about namecheap. so i came check here.

because this project is all not so serious, i picked “waltuh” as the name. it did have a connection with Walter White, and the reason i picked the name is because i like doing experiments, and so i picked that.

for the tld, there is actually several a bunch of TLDs out here that is cheap, But one thing that caught on my eye is .cyou TLD. when i googled about it, it's basically a short for “see you”.

so, the end result is, “waltuh.cyou”. “Waltuh, See you”.

the initial purchase costed around a buck per year. I thought i will only pay for that amount every year, But one i checked how much it will actually cost, it's $19.68/year. It's indeed expensive for us Indonesian as our IDR currency is weak against USD, but given that it's just one time per year purchase, I don't see any bad reason for it.

and here we are.

well, what are we even doing here, anyway?

now, as of the time i'm writing this, waltuh.cyou is now a month old.
